Two Trojans Compete in 2008 Davis Cup

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Redshirt junior Abdullah Magdas, of Kuwait, and alumnus Prakash Amritraj, of India, led their respective countries to victory in the first round of 2008 Davis Cup action.

In Mishref, Kuwait, current Trojan Abdullah Magdas won his first singles match in three straight sets and a reverse singles match in two, as Kuwait defeated Pacific Oceania 4-1. To open his Davis Cup competition, Magdas topped Pacific Oceania's Michael Leong 6-1, 6-1, 6-4. His next opponent was Juan Langton, whom Magdas dispatched 7-6 (2), 6-4. Kuwait advances to the second round in April, where it will face New Zealand. The winner of this match and the winner of China-Indonesia advance to Group I in the 2009 Davis Cup.

In New Delhi, India, former Trojan Prakash Amritraj won his match in four sets, beating Farruhk Dustov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to help India defeat Uzbekistan. India will next face Japan in the second round in April against Japan. The winner of that match and the winner of the Australia-Thailand match move onto the World Group Play-offs.

Magdas has since returned to rejoin his Trojan teammates at this week's ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held Feb. 14-17 in Seattle. He holds a 6-1 overall singles record so far in his first season of competition at USC.
