California Downs Nebraska, 6-1
Feb. 15, 2008
Tempe, Ariz. - Sophomore pitcher Marissa Drewrey kept the Nebraska hitters off-balance and the offense came to life as the California Golden Bear softball team etched out a 6-1 victory over the Huskers in the opening day of the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State.
Drewrey was masterful in the circle, allowing just one run (unearned) on one hit and six strikeouts to earn her second win of the season. She got out of a huge jam in the second inning when Nebraska had the bases loaded and one out and threatening to carve into Cal's 2-0 lead. However, Drewrey recorded back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the Cal lead.
Sophomore Bernice Masaniai ignited the offense with three hits on four plate appearances with two runs and five RBI, including a mammoth home run in the seventh inning off of the ASU scoreboard. Erika Racklin tallied a pair of hits and a pair of runs as well.
Cal grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Masaniai slapped a double to center field to plate both Racklin and Valerie Arioto.
A Nebraska run in the third inning trimmed the lead to 2-1. Cal, however, padded its lead with a two-run fifth inning after a Masaniai single to left field drove in plated Gina Leomiti and an Arioto bunt single scored Masaniai.
Masaniai's two-run blast in the seventh inning gave Cal the 6-1 lead.
