Feb. 16, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Brook Lopez had 23 points and 10 rebounds and his twin brother Robin added 14 points to lead No. 7 Stanford to a 67-66 victory over Arizona on Saturday.
Trailing 62-54 with 4:23 to play, the Wildcats scored nine straight points to take a 63-62 lead on Chase Budinger's free throw with 2:03 remaining.
Brook Lopez tied it with a free throw and then hit a 2-footer to put the Cardinal up 65-63 with 1 minute to go. Sixteen seconds later, Budinger responded with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Wildcats a 1-point lead.
After Brook Lopez hit two free throws with 18 seconds to go, Budinger missed a running 5-footer in the final seconds.
Stanford (21-4, 10-3 Pac-10) bounced back from a tough overtime loss at Arizona State that ended less than 39 hours before tipoff at McKale Center. Brook Lopez scored 30 points and Robin Lopez had 16 in that game, and they dominated the smaller Wildcats (16-9, 6-6) on Saturday.
The Cardinal withstood a 31-point outburst by Arizona's Jerryd Bayless, who has scored at least 30 points in three straight games. In his previous two games, Bayless scored 39 against Arizona State and 33 against California.
The freshman from Phoenix scored 16 straight points in the second half but it wasn't enough for against the taller, more physical Cardinal.
Budinger added 23 points for Arizona, which has lost three of four.
Stanford is the Pac-10's leading rebounding team, averaging 10.5 more per game than their opponents. Arizona ranks eighth and is outrebounded by an average of 4.2 per game.
With the Lopez twins sealing off the boards, the Cardinal outrebounded Arizona 40-26.
Arizona's inside game took a hit when center Jordan Hill fouled out with 5:27 to play.
