Johnson Takes Third at Husky Classic
Feb. 16, 2008
SEATTLE, Wash. - California All-American seniors Alysia Johnson and Ed Wright were two of five Golden Bears to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships this afternoon at the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor Track Facility. Junior Mark Matusak and sophomores Michael Coe and Yosef Ghebray were the other three provisional qualifiers.
Johnson, Cal's two-time NCAA champion, placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.70. Wright, the 2007 Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional champion, claimed second in the high jump when he tied his personal best with a mark of 7-3.25 (2.22m). Junior All-American Inika McPherson also made her 2008 debut, taking third in the high jump with a mark of 5-8.50 (1.74m).
'Alysia won her heat, but two girls in different races technically finished with better times, but she provisionally qualified which is always good,' said Cal interim director of track and field Tony Sandoval. 'Ed looks like he really could be a factor at the NCAA championships.'
Senior Thomas Mack was the only Bear to win an event on Saturday. He set the school indoor record for the 60-meter hurdles when he took top honors with a time of 7.94.
'Mack really looked good today, and he won his race,' Sandoval said. 'Hopefully he'll continue to get some good results next time out at the MPSF championships.'
In the mile, Matusak and Coe each reached new personal bests along with provisionally qualifying for the indoor national championships. Matusak clocked in at 4:03.15 to take 12th, while Coe finished right behind him in 13th at 4:03.43. Their fellow distance runner, Ghebray, hit a new PR in the 3000, the event in which he provisionally qualified for the indoor national championships, crossing the finish line at 8:04.15.
Freshman Cherrelle Garrett took third in the 60-meter dash with a new PR of 7.46. Senior Donny Appanaitis, who has already provisionally qualified for the indoor national championships, took third in the pole vault with a mark of 16-7.25 (5.06m).
Cal has next week off before returning to Seattle for the MPSF Indoor Championships Feb. 29-March 1.
