Cal Buries Western Michigan, 8-0 in Five Innings
Feb. 16, 2008
Tempe, Ariz. - Led by Valerie Arioto's dominating pitching performance in the circle and Katie Vickers' three-run home run in the third inning, the California Golden Bears defeated the Western Michigan Broncos, 8-0 (five innings) at the Kajikawa Classic hosted Arizona State on Saturday.
Arioto allowed just one hit over five innings with nine strikeouts to earn her first win in the circle. Vickers meanwhile went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Bernice Masaniai possessed a hot bat with three hits on three plate appearances with two runs and an RBI.
After putting a solo run on the board in the first inning, Cal tacked on two more in the second inning, before adding three runs (courtesy of the Vickers blast) in the third stanza. Masaniai connected for a double to center field in the fourth to plate Gina Leomiti and Vickers slapped a single to left field to score Vernae Sevilla to make it 8-0. The game was called in the top of the fifth because of the enforced tournament run rule.
