Feb. 17, 2008
BERKELEY - The California women's gymnastics team lost to No. 7 UCLA, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears (2-5, 0-5 Pac-10) finished with a final score of 189.425, while the Bruins (11-0, 4-0 Pac-10) secured a mark of 195.225.
UCLA swept all four events. The closest event was floor, as Cal lost by the score of 48.000-47.475. The best event score of the night for the Bears came on bars (47.900). Senior Siobhan Luce led the way for Cal in that event, tallying a 9.800. Luce also posted a 9.725 on floor. Also earning a strong mark on bars was junior Jessica Kelley with a 9.775.
'We had a lot of strong personal performances today,' said Cal head coach Cari DuBois. 'But we also had some uncharacteristic performances, like on beam. Hopefully it was a fluke thing, but it definitely doesn't reflect how we've been practicing. We're going to keep plugging away in the gym. We have another meet next weekend, and we're going to come up with some team goals going into the competition on and build our confidence off those performances.'
The highest individual score of the day came from junior Bridgette Glass, who secured a 9.850 on beam. She tied for second among all gymnasts with that mark. Glass also contributed to the Bears' strong bars team score, recording a 9.750.
In the all-around, Luce was first among Cal gymnasts with a score of 37.550, with sophomore Sophia Hocini second on the team at 37.400. UCLA's Anna Li won the all-around with a final score of 39.425.
The Bears travel to Palo Alto next weekend to face Stanford Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. Cal returns to Berkeley on March 16 when it hosts a quad meet against Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis and San Jose State at 2 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
