No. 6 USC Takes First Loss To No. 3 Ohio State

Feb. 16, 2008

SEATTLE, WASH. -- One team was going to have a win streak snapped on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle. Unfortunately for the USC men's tennis team, it was up against a higher ranked Ohio State squad, which had nine straight wins coming into its match against the Trojans. USC's own win streak had helped power the Trojans past Illinois the previous day, but the Buckeyes managed the victory on Saturday in a 4-1 decision that handed USC its first loss of 2008. Now 8-1 on the year, USC moves on in ITA National Indoor competition, set to face Texas on Sunday.

Ohio State grabbed the doubles point early with wins at the No. 3 and then the No. 2 position to bring up singles play. There, USC's Abdullah Magdas suffered his first singles loss in six matches with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Matt Allare at the No. 4 position. Robert Farah cut into Ohio State's lead, making the match 2-1 with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Justin Kronauge at No. 1. But the Buckeyes nabbed two more straight-set wins to secure their place in the semifinals. At No. 2, USC's Kaes Van't Hof was topped 6-3, 6-2 by Steven Moneke, and the Jason McNaughton fell 6-4, 6-4 to Drew Eberle at No. 6 to round out the competition on the day for the Trojans.
