Gomez and Cougars Down the Broncos, 4-3

PULLMAN, Wash. - For the second straight match freshman Jessica Gomez sealed the deal earning the victory on the final match of the evening, to help the Cougars grab a 4-3 victory, over the visiting Boise State Broncos, Wednesday, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The No. 44 (ITA) Washington State Cougars (8-1 overall) found themselves down 1-0 after No. 57 Boise State (3-3 overall) swept the doubles portion of the match to earn the point.

WSU fought their way back into the match as senior Aleksandra Stefanova came through with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Bianca Jochimsen at No. 2. to improve her record to 4-4 in dual match play.

Senior Ekaterina Burduli added the second point of the day when she defeated Pichittra Thongdach of Boise State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 1. The win pushes her season record to 19-3 which is best on the team. Also with the victory she has amassed 82 career singles victories which is second all time and just five wins behind Erica Perkins for first all-time.

At No. 5, Junior Aleksandra Cekic continued to play well as she earned her sixth win in dual match play which pushes her record to 11-5 on season as she defeated Jana Mackova of Boise State in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

With all eyes on No. 6 singles, freshman Jessica Gomez come through with a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) win over Stacey Housley of Boise State. Falling behind 5-3 in the first set, Gomez fought her way back to force a tie breaker before she won the first set. Trading points during the second set, Gomez pushed through a 5-4 deficit to tie the score at 6-6, where she finished off the win in the tie breaker to help earn the Cougars their third straight victory.

The Cougars dropped two matches in singles play as freshman Ekaterina Kamendova fell in three sets to Polina Kokoulina, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3., while junior Bianca Selaru also fell 6-0, 7-5 to Klaudia Wlodarczyk at No. 4.

The Cougars return to action Friday, February, 22 at 1:30 p.m., as they host California in their Pac-10 opener at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
