Ali Cleared To Compete; Flodstrom Signs For 2009

LOS ANGELES - The USC Trojans' track and field team was informed that heptathlete Nia Ali has been cleared for competition in the 2008 season it was announced today (Feb. 22) by Director of Track and Field Ron Allice. He also announced that Frida Flodstrom from Sollentuna, Sweden has signed a National Letter of Intent with USC and will enroll in the Fall along with the previously announced impressive recruiting class of Elan Hilaire, Dalilah Muhammad, Ezinne Okparaebo, Aareon Payne and Blake Shaw.
Ali, a sophomore transfer from Tennessee, was granted her transfer request by the Volunteers so she does not need to redshirt this season. Ali is a multi-talented athlete who can score for the Trojans in a variety of areas. She won the SEC heptathlon championship as a freshman in 2007 with a score of 5,490. Also at the SEC Championships, Ali placed third in the 100m HH with a time of 13.25 and ninth in the high jump with a clearance of 5-7 (1.70m). She was a NCAA qualifier, but did not compete at the championships.
Flodstrom is a transfer student from the Karolinska Institute and will enroll at USC in the Fall as a sophomore. Flodstrom's specialty is the 800m race and she owns a personal best of 2:05.76. In the Finnkampen competition between Sweden and Finland, she placed 6th in 2006 and 3rd in 2007 in the 800m race. Flodsrom was a 800m semifinalist at the 2006 World Junior Championships held in Beijing, China. She combined to win four gold medals, one sliver and one bronze at the 2005 and 2006 Nordic Junior Championships. Her best outdoor time in the 400m is 55.83 and in the 1500m is 4:27.82.
