Cougars Fall to California in Pac-10 Opener, 6-1

Feb. 22, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University senior Ekaterina Burduli upset No. 7 Susie Babos at No. 1 singles, but it was not enough as the Cougars fell to No. 11 California Golden Bears, 6-1 Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The Bears boasted five ranked players and one ranked doubles team to defeat the Cougars.

The No. 44 (ITA) Washington State Cougars (8-2 overall 0-1 Pac-10) found themselves down 1-0 after California (5-2 overall 2-0 Pac-10) swept the doubles portion of the match to earn the point.

In doubles play the Cougars battled hard in a losing effort. No. 1 doubles tandem Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova lost to 53rd ranked doubles team of Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano, 8-5. At No. 2, Aleksandra Cekic and Jessica Gomez fell to Claire Ilcinkas and Marina Cossou, 8-5.

In singles play, freshman Ekaterina Kamendova took No. 41 Cristina Visico to a third set but fell, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. It was the second time Kamendova took an opponent to a close third set this week.

Burduli secured the Cougars lone point as she posted the upset over Susie Babos in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. This is the second highest-ranked opponent a Cougar has defeated in school history, and Burduli also holds the highest win in school history when she defeated Dea Sumantri of the University of Washington, who was ranked No. 6 at the time.

The win pushes her season record to 20-3 which is best on the team. Also with the victory she has amassed 83 career singles victories which is second all-time and just four wins behind career leader Erica Perkins.

'We are so proud of Eka's fight and tenacity,' head coach Lisa Hart said. 'She is a great leader and sets a great example for the rest of the team to follow.'

The Cougars return to action Saturday, February, 23 at 11a.m., as they host Stanford at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
