Garberg, Wauters Win WSU Indoor Open II Weight Throws

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State senior McKenzie Garberg won the women's 20-pound weight throw with a lifetime-best distance of 55-feet, 2 1/4 inches (16.82m) Friday night at the WSU Open II Indoor, a two-day track and field meet held at WSU's Indoor Practice Facility.
Garberg, from Benton City, Wash., improved her personal-best mark which is also fifth-best in school history. Eastern Washington's Erica Chaney finished second with a throw of 51-11 (15.82m).
Idaho's Matthew Wauters won the men's 35-pound weight throw with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 68-9 3/4 (20.97m), just under the redshirt junior's season-best and eighth-best national mark of 68-10 (20.98m). Idaho redshirt Evan Ruud finished second with a throw of 63-6 3.4 (19.37m).
WSU's Phil MacArthur placed third with a lifetime-best toss of 62-1 3/4 (18.94m), a four-foot improvement over his previous personal-best and the eighth-best toss in school history. Cougar Chase Mancuso finished night with a throw of 55-2 (16.81m) for eighth place.
The WSU Open II Indoor Track and Field Meet continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the remaining field and all the running events. Spectator admission is free of charge.
