Feb. 22, 2008
San Luis Obispo - Cal Poly pitcher Anna Cahn surrendered one run on three hits over seven innings to help propel the Mustangs to a 3-1 win over California in the night cap of the Mustang Classic on Friday. Cal defeated UAB, 10-2 in the earlier game of the afternoon.
The Bears (8-6) take on Sacramento State and Santa Clara in day two of the tournament hosted by Cal Poly tomorrow.
Despite notching 10 strikeouts, sophomore Marissa Drewrey suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings. This was the third time this season that Drewrey has struck out 10 or more in a game.
Freshman Sanoe Kekahuna extended her hitting streak to 10 games after recording one base knock on three plate appearances. Freshman Valerie Arioto also extended her hitting streak to seven games with a single and a run scored in the first inning in the losing effort.
The Bears manufactured its lone run of the contest in the top of the first stanza when Arioto reached base on a single, before matriculating around the bases on several miscues by the Mustangs, which eventually led to the score.
Cal Poly answered with two runs, both with two outs, in the bottom half of the first. Cahn provided the key hit with a double down the left field line, allowing Melissa Pura and Stephanie Correia to score.
The Mustangs tacked on another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
