Huskies Split Two Games at Lobo Invitational
Feb. 23, 2008
ALBUQUERQUE - Ashlyn Watson hit a two-run home run to lead the No. 22/23 (NFCA/USA Softball) Washington Huskies past host New Mexico, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Lobo Invitational. Earlier in the day, the Huskies lost 18-0 to Wichita State in five innings.
Washington (6-5-1) rebounded from a disappointing outing against Wichita State (7-5) for the win over New Mexico (4-5) behind Watson's two-run home run in the second inning and the pitching of Caitlin Noble.
Watson finished the game 2-for-3 and Noble pitched all seven innings, giving up just five hits, two earned runs and walking five. She struckout six and upped her record to 5-3 on the season.
Washington's third run came in the fifth inning when Marnie Koziol drove home Amanda Fleischman from third on a ground ball to first base. UNM first baseman Lindsey Elcess threw home on the play, but her throw was late and Fleischman slid in safely to put Washington up 3-1.
In the game against Wichita State, the Huskies trailed 3-0 after three innings of play before the Shockers 10 runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth. Washington committed six errors in the game, including two in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning.
Washington plays Missouri tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. PT, in a continuation of a game that was stopped on Friday due to rain. The game will continue from the bottom of the second inning, where the Huskies were leading 2-0 and had runners on second and third with one out.
