Yocum Leads Cal After 1st Round of Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 12 California opened the spring season at the Wildcat Invitational on Monday at Arizona National Golf Course and is in ninth place with a score of 297 after the first round. No. 3 Arizona State is in first at 287, which is one shot ahead of No. 8 Arizona, No. 15 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Duke and No. 1 UCLA.
No. 7 Auburn is sixth at 292, No. 18 Pepperdine is seventh at 293 and No. 4 USC is eighth at 296 at the 16-team tournament.
Junior Shannon Yocum leads the Bears in a tie for third with a score of one-under 70. Yocum fired two birdies on the front nine and the back nine, finishing at one under on the front nine. She played bogey-free golf over the final seven holes, carding birdies on the par 4, 13th and 15th holes. Yocum began the fall campaign on a high note, as well, as the winner of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.
Cal freshman Pia Halbig is tied for 19th at two-over 73, and junior Allison Goodman is tied for 30th at 74. Halbig had three birdies on the back nine on par 3, 4 and 5 holes, and Goodman tallied 15 pars and three bogeys on the day. Sophomore Roseanne Niven and freshman Belinda Diamond each shot an 80 for Cal. Diamond was competing in her first-ever round for the Bears. Niven finished strong with a birdie on the par 5, 18th hole.
Duke's Amanda Blumenhurst is first at 68, and Stanford's Mari Chun is second at 69.
Cal tees off the second round from the 10th hole at 9 a.m. MT on Tuesday.
