Cal's Tyson Ross Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week
Feb. 26, 2008
BERKELEY, CALIF. - California junior right-hander Tyson Ross has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Ross, a preseason All-American from Oakland, Calif., combined with sophomore right-hander Daniel Wolford to one-hit Kansas State as the Golden Bears won their season-opener, 5-1, last Friday at Evans Diamond. Cal, which had trailed 1-0 after Ross had given up a lead-off homer to Wildcat right fielder Jordan Cruz to start the game, came back to win as the Bears' standout went on to throw 5.0 innings with only one hit, one run, one walk and seven strikeouts. Wolford, a transfer from Long Beach State, earned his first save at Cal, pitching the final 4.0 innings with no hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
Ross is a preseason All-American in Baseball America, Rivals.com and Collegiate Baseball, and is on the Golden Spikes and Wallace Award Watch Lists as a national player of the year candidate. He is coming off an outstanding 2007 summer with the USA National Team where he went 4-1 with a 0.82 ERA, striking out 39 batters with only seven walks in 43.2 innings. A first-team All-Pac-10 selection last spring for the Bears, Ross finished with a 6-6 mark and was second in the league with a 2.49 ERA and third in the conference with 120 strikeouts in 115.2 innings. His 120 strikeouts were second on the Cal all-time single-season strikeout list and he threw at least 6.0 innings in 15 of his 17 starts, and 7.0 innings or more 11 times, including a complete game at Stanford.
Ross currently has 212 career strikeouts, eighth on the school's all-time career strikeout list.
The Bears next travel to the University of San Diego Tournament, Feb. 28-Mar. 2. On Thursday, Feb. 28, Cal faces Fresno State at 1 p.m. at the University of San Diego. On Friday, Feb. 29, the Bears take on Missouri at 1 p.m. at San Diego State. On Saturday, Mar. 1, Cal plays at San Diego State at 6 p.m., and finally, the Bears visit host University of San Diego at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 2.
Cal's next home contest is Tuesday, Mar. 4 at 1:30 p.m. when the Bears host Bay Area rival Stanford in a non-conference game at Evans Diamond.
