UCLA'S GIONNA DISALVATORE NAMED PAC-10 SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

DiSalvatore, a Palm Harbor, Fla. native, takes home her second honor in only her third week of collegiate play as she continues to lead the Bruins at the plate, compiling a .667 average (8-of-12) for the week with two doubles, a triple, and a home run in four games against ranked opponents.

The freshman went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the first game of the week against Massachusetts, then came up with a bases-loaded double to give the Bruins a lead they would never relinquish in a 5-2 victory over No. 19/18 Georgia. DiSalvatore continued to mash the ball on Saturday as she went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and two RBI in Saturday's two games against No. 10/13 Baylor and No. 14/14 Hawai'i.

On Sunday, No. 2/3 Northwestern respected her power enough to walk her twice. Fortunately, the Bruin offense was effective anyway as UCLA picked up the 6-2 victory with DiSalvatore scoring a run.

DiSalvatore currently sits second in the Pac-10 in batting average (.545) as well as third in slugging pct. (.886), on-base pct. (.615) and runs batted in (21).

The Bruins (13-2) have seemingly settled into a nice groove after dropping two of their first eight games, rebounding with seven straight victories.

Coming off the impressive 5-0 week, the Bruins (13-2) will welcome Cal State Bakersfield to Easton Stadium on Wed., Feb. 27 before heading to the San Diego Classic hosted by San Diego State beginning Fri., Feb. 29. UCLA will face another set of five opponents in three days of competition, including James Madison, San Diego, Eastern Michigan, SDSU, and St. Peter's.

This is the second career Player of the Week honor for DiSalvatore and with a sweep of the accolades this week by her and teammate Anjelica Selden, the Bruins have now received 101 awards all time.

ALSO NOMINATED: Stacie Chambers, ARIZ; Mindy Cowles, ASU; Sanoe Kekahuna, CAL; Monique Fuiava, ORE; Dani Chisholm, OSU; Michelle Smith, STAN; Jace Williams, WASH.

Selden, a Vacaville, Calif. native, picked up a save in the Bruins' 4-2 victory over Massachusetes on Friday and then stormed through three ranked teams and claimed three impressive complete game victories.

In her first start of the weekend, against No. 18/19 Georgia, Selden struck out 13 Bulldogs while allowing only two runs on two hits. On Saturday, Selden did not walk a batter and struck out seven, limiting No. 10/13 Baylor to only four hits.

Selden struck out the side three times in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings as well as the final four batters of the game.

The senior improves to 7-1 on the season with 78 strikeouts in 52 innings, also having only waked four batters all season, best in the Pac-10. She also sits fourth in the Conference in strikeouts, as well as third in opposing batting average (.133), seventh in ERA (1.35), and sixth in innings pitched.
