UC Irvine Scores Four In The 5th For 7-3 Win Over USC

IRVINE, Calif. - Ben Orloff and Ryan Fisher had two RBI each as part of a four-run fifth inning as the UC Irvine Anteaters defeated the USC Trojans, 7-3, in a nonconference game at Anteater Ballpark. Daniel Bibona (1-0) kept the Anteaters perfect on the season at 4-0 with six innings where he allowed one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Anthony Vasquez (0-1) took the loss for USC after allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman right-hander Ryan Cabral (Norwalk/Don Bosco Tech HS) threw 2 2/3 scoreless inning, allowing two hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Mike Roskopf singled to right in the USC fifth and moved to third on Hector Rabago's double to left. First baseman Derek Perren then lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 Trojans' lead before Bibona struck out Will Rice and Billy Pinkerton to end the inning.
The Anteaters responded in the bottom half of the inning. Eric Deragisch singled and stole second, followed by Vasquez walking Tony Asaro. Ollie Linton was hit by the pitch to load the bases and Orloff delivered with the two-run single on a full count. Fisher added two more runs by hitting a double down the third base line as the Anteaters led, 4-1.
UCI added three more runs in the eighth, capped by Linton's RBI single to right. USC (3-2) added two runs in the ninth and had the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate with Nick Buss, but Eric Pettis earned his second save by getting Buss to fly out to center for the final out.
USC co-hosts the MLB Urban Invitational this weekend with UCLA. The Trojans will play their first home game against Bethune-Cookman on Friday (Feb. 29) at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live via video webcast on usctrojans.com, courtesy of Trojan TV All-Access.
Notes: Hector Rabago extended his season-opening hitting streak to five games...Rabago's longest hitting streak last year was two games...freshman pitcher Jeff Grijalva (San Clemente/San Clemente HS) made his collegiate debut tonight, allowing one hit and no runs in two-thirds of an inning.
