Cougars Ride Opening Doubles Point to a 4-3 Victory Over No. 46 Oregons

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis squad grabbed their 10th victory of the season as they defeated the Oregon Ducks in a Nonconference match, Friday, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The No. 44 (ITA) Washington State Cougars (10-3 overall 0-2 Pac-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after they won two of the three doubles matches to clinch the point.

Leading the way for the Cougars during doubles play was senior Ekaterina Burduli and freshman Ekaterina Kamendova. They started things off with an 8-1 victory over Oregon's Celine Rolly and Stephanie MacFarlane at No. 1. Bianca Selaru and Aleksandra Stefanova picked up the second win for the Cougars after they posted an 8-4 win over Carman Seremeta and Claudia Hirt at No. 2.

Senior Ekaterina Burduli downed Oregon's Celine Rolly in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, to give the team a 2-0 lead. The win is Burduli's 85 career singles victory which is second all-time and just two wins behind career leader Erica Perkins.

Aleksandra Stefanova improved to 7-5 in dual match play after she defeated Anna Powaska 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 to increase Cougars lead to 3-0.

Freshman Jessica Gomez clinched the match for Washington State at the No. 6 spot as she downed Siobhan Cavan of Oregon, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). With the victory, Gomez improves to 7-2 at the No. 6 spot and to 13-6 overall which is second best on the team.

'We are excited with how we competed and I could not be more proud of how Gomez came through,' head coach Lisa Hart said. 'We will get back to work tomorrow in preparation for the California road trip.'

The Cougars lost three singles matches on the day. Freshman Ekaterina Kamendova pushed her opponent to a third set up ended up falling to Carman Seremeta, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Washington State returns to action Friday, March, 7 at 1:30 p.m., against UCLA in Los Angeles Calif. as they begin a seven match road trip.
