Dawg Use Eight-Run Sixth In 9-7 Win At Pacific
March 1, 2008
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Washington baseball team erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-1 lead and then hung on for a 9-7 win over Pacific Saturday in the second of three games at Klein Family Field.
The first 11 Husky hitters in the sixth inning reached base. After Bradley Boyer opened by reaching on an error, Ty Rasmussen, Kyle Conley and Brett Wilcox followed with consecutive doubles. The big hit of the inning was a three-run homer from senior right fielder Andy Lentz, his first of the season.
The Huskies improved to 4-3 with the win while the Tigers fell to 1-5.
Husky starter Jason Erickson (1-1) went five innings for the win. He allowed on run on four hits and a walk while striking out five. Pacific starter Tyler Waldron (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits over five-plus innings.
After the Huskies' eight-run outburst, the Tigers made it interesting. After scoring one in the sixth and two in the seventh, Kurt Wideman's pinch-hit, three-run homer in the eighth cut the lead to 9-7. However, freshman Geoff Brown, who gave up the homer and then walked the next batter to bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth, retired the last six batters in order to preserve the win.
The Huskies picked up the game's first run in the second. After Russell reached on a bloop single to right, he advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt from catcher Joe Oliveira. Freshman Troy Scott's groundout to second send home Russell, giving the UW a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Pacific tied the score as a groundout drove in Adam Ching from third base.
The series wraps up with a 12 noon game Sunday. Fans can catch live audio for no charge at gohuskies.com.
