March 1, 2008
Las Vegas - The UNLV softball team dealt California a 3-2 loss in the late game on Saturday night of the Eller Media Stadium Classic, snapping the Golden Bears' five-game winning streak. Cal, who defeated No. 15 Hawaii earlier in the day, concludes tournament play against Western Kentucky at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.
Freshman Sanoe Kekahuna and sophomore Taylor Kelly supplied four of Cal's five total hits in the nightcap. Marissa Drewrey suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings of work. Drewrey struck out 11 batters as well - the fourth time this season she has recorded 10 or more strikeouts.
The Rebels responded however with all three of their runs in the bottom half of the third. Laura Briones delivered a key two-run single to left field, giving UNLV a 2-1 lead, before a Stephanie Bean single to left field drove in another Rebel run, making the score 3-1.
The Bears had their best chance in the top of the fifth inning with runners on first and second with one out. After a UNLV pitching change occurred, Cal suffered two strikeouts which ended the inning.
