March 1, 2008
Long Beach - Senior Emily Silver and juniors Dana Vollmer and Lauren Rogers quickly went back to work in the final day of the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, earning the top times in the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard backstroke, respectively on Saturday morning. Both Vollmer and Rogers repeated as Pac-10 champions in the 100 fly and back, respectively, last night.
Silver, who dominated the freestyle events for Cal with speed and precision all year long, posted the fastest 100 free preliminary time and third-fastest time in school history at 48.60. She was joined in the finals by freshman Hannah Wilson, who recorded the sixth-fastest preliminary time and the eighth-fastest 100 time in school history at 49.19. Junior Madison Kennedy qualified for the finals with the seventh-fastest prelim mark of 49.23.
Considered as one of the nation's elite, Vollmer cruised to the top time of the 200 fly prelims, touching the wall at 1:54.62 - nearly one second faster than Stanford's Elaine Breeden. Her 1:54.62 was also the fifth-fastest time in school history. Vollmer broke Mary T. Meagher's 1986 Cal dual meet mark in the 200 fly of 1:56.71 with a record time of 1:53.96 set at Stanford on Feb. 16, 2008. That time is the second-fastest in program history.
Joining Vollmer in the finals of the 200 fly is senior Rachel Ridgeway, who posted the fourth-fastest preliminary post of 1:56.95 - the tenth-fastest time in school history, and freshman Amanda Sims, who recorded a 1:58.61 - sixth-fastest preliminary time.
With her name prominently displayed in Cal's all-time top 10 charts in the 100 backstroke, Rogers added to her resume in the 200 back with the fastest prelim time of 1:56.33 - fifth-fastest time in school history. Rogers had the fastest third 50-yard split (among the top 8) at 29.47 to put her in contention for the top spot.
