No. 3 UCLA Pulls Out 4-3 Victory Over USC

LOS ANGELES - Alden Carrithers delivered a two-run, go-ahead double in the eighth while Brandon Lafferty threw five scoreless inning in relief Sunday as the No. 3 UCLA Bruins defeated the USC Trojans, 4-3, in the final game of the 2008 MLB Urban Invitational at Dedeaux Field. The Bruins won the tournament, going undefeated on the weekend with wins over Bethune-Cookman and Southern while the Trojans finished 2-1 on the weekend.

The top of the Bruins' order of Jermaine Curtis, Carrithers and Brandon Crawford combined for seven hits and three runs scored as UCLA improved to 5-1 on the season. USC fell to 5-3 overall.

Lafferty allowed only two singles and retired 12 batters in a row at one point. Sophomore starter Brad Boxberger lasted five innings for the Trojans, allowing one run on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

USC scored first as Vasquez, Joe De Pinto and Nick Buss loaded the bases with consecutive singles. Lopez lifted a fly ball to right as the sacrifice fly plated Vasquez for the first run. Sophomore catcher Robert Stock then drew a bases-loaded walk for an early 2-0 lead.

Vasquez and Perren put back-to-back singles together in the fourth and De Pinto hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left for the Trojans' three-run lead.

UCLA got on the board in the fifth after Curtis led off with a walk and back-to-back singles by Carrithers and Crawford loaded the bases. Boxberger struck out Cody Decker and looked to record another one on Justin Uribe, but Stock could not hold onto the third struck. Uribe then hit a ground ball to first that scored Curtis on the fielder's choice. Boxberger then induced a line drive out from Gabe Cohen for the final out.

Crawford made it a one-run deficit in the seventh with a leadoff homer off USC freshman reliever Jeff Grijalva. In the Bruin eighth, both runs came with two outs. Brent Dean was hit by a pitch and Curtis delivered a single to right on a 1-2 count from reliever Hector Rabago (0-1) before Carrithers hit the long fly ball to center for the eventual game winner.

Derek Perren hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth and De Pinto worked the count full, but grounded out to Crawford to end the game.

Notes: UCLA has a six-game winning streak against USC...both teams will play a Pac-10 Conference series (April 4-6) at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium...USC senior Roberto Lopez went 7-for-11 this weekend (.636) with two doubles and five RBI and is now hitting .429 on the season.
