Brent Chriswell of the wrestling team and Dominique' Maloy of the women's track and field team have been named Student-Athletes of the Month, the Office of Student-Athlete Development announced Monday.
Chriswell, a justice studies freshman, transferred to ASU in the fall of 2007 after a year at Purdue. Since becoming a Sun Devil, Chriswell has performed extremely well both academically and athletically.
He consistently puts in a large number of hours in the ICA studying and doing work for his classes, and his focus and motivation have him off to a great start this spring.
He has also had a strong first season with the wrestling team. He is currently ranked No. 15 in the 184-pound division in the InterMat/NWCA/NWMA rankings, and he was ranked third in that division in most recent Pac-10 rankings.
In addition to all that, he has participated in a number of community service projects through the year. He has volunteered at the UMOM New Day Center in Phoenix, the Crossroads Youth Intervention's Liberty House in Phoenix and the Wilson Community Center neighborhood clean-up with the rest of his wrestling teammates.
Maloy, a freshman majoring in elementary education, is also in her first year at ASU. She was a Maroon & Gold Scholar in the fall semester, and she has continued her commitment to excellence in the spring.
She has already earned the respect of her teammates and coach, always showing up on time and motivated for practices. She is also committed to getting better and encouraging her teammates to do the same.
Her Sun Devil career got off to a strong start, as she won the 60m dash and 200m dash at the season-opening Friday Night Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz. on Jan. 25. She also ran the 60m dash at the Mountain 'T' Invite in 7.52 seconds, the fifth-best time in school history.
Maloy, with the rest of the track and field team, also helped man the start and finish lines at the 'Kids Rock Mile Run' for the Phoenix Children's Hospital fun run event in January.
