Netherlands Downs UW, 8-6, In Exhibition Game
March 6, 2008
HONOLULU - Ashlyn Watson went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles but the No. 22/24 (NFCA/USA Softball) Washington Huskies dropped an exhibition game to the Netherlands National Team, 8-6, at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
Watson was one three UW players that went 2-for-4 in the game, as the Huskies finished with nine hits. Morgan Stuart and Alyson McWherter also went 2-for-4, with Stuart driving in a pair of runs and McWherter adding a double and a stolen base.
The Huskies scored single runs in the first and second innings for an early 2-0 lead. After the Netherlands cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third, the Huskies tacked on two more runs and led 4-1 after three innings.
The Netherlands scored four runs in the top of the fourth on three hits, including a two-RBI double by Noemi Boekel, and also benefited from three straight walks issued by UW pitcher Caitlin Noble to jump in front 5-4.
Washington retook the lead, 6-5, after the first five batters of the fourth inning reached base safely, but Netherlands relief pitcher Rebecca Soumeru came on with one out and runners on second and third and quickly retired the side.
Soumeru limited the Huskies to just three hits in three innings of work after the UW knocked around Netherlands starter Kristi de Vries for six hits in three and one-third innings.
Netherlands scored three runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 8-6, taking advantage of the Huskies only error in the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies had runners of second and third with one out, but Judith van Kampen came in to get the final two outs and earn the save.
Washington (10-6-1) opens up tournament play tomorrow with a 12 p.m. PT game against Eastern Kentucky. Immediately following that game the Huskies will face Idaho State.
