No. 6 Men's Tennis Downs No. 10 USC, 5-2
March 6, 2008
LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team passed one of its biggest tests of the season on Thursday, taking a 5-2 victory over No. 10 USC in front of several hundred fans at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins', whose only loss on the season was to top-ranked Virginia, improve to 10-1 on the year. With the loss, the Trojans fall to 9-3 overall.
UCLA won the doubles point on Thursday when freshman Holden Seguso and senior Mathieu Dehaine posted an 8-6 victory over Jason McNaughton/Gary Sacks at court No. 2. Jeremy Drean and Michael Look set up the clinching win with an 8-4 victory of their own at court No. 3.
Once singles play began, Dehaine gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the match, as he quickly downed Jaak Poldma, 6-1, 6-3 at court No. 3.
USC, however, answered back with its only two points of the day, as the Trojans took straight-set wins at court Nos. 1 and 2. Robert Farah downed senior Harel Srugo, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot, while Kaes Van't Hof defeated Seguso, 7-6(3), 6-3 at court No. 2.
However, from that point on it was all UCLA, as the Bruins swept matches on the back three courts. Drean gave UCLA a 3-2 lead with a 7-6(2), 6-2 win over McNaughton at court No. 5. That win set the stage for freshman Nick Meister, who clinched the victory for the Bruins with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Abdullah Magdas at court No. 6.
'It was a dog fight,' said UCLA head coach Billy Martin. 'I can't say I was very optomistic coming in. For a freshman to come out and win a big match like that for us was huge.'
In the final match of the day, Look and Sacks went the distance at court No. 4, playing three tiebreakers before Look eventually prevailed 6-7(8), 7-6(6), 7-6(5).
UCLA gained 2.5 points in the race for the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy, as USC now leads the race 50-22.5.
The Bruins will be in action again on Monday, hosting No. 11 Baylor at 1:30 p.m.
