DiSalvatore Comes Through in the Clutch Again for Second-Ranked Bruins
March 7, 2008
LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore drove in all three Bruin runs, including the game winner on an RBI double in the top of the seventh, as the second-ranked Bruins beat Notre Dame 3-2 on Friday at the Long Beach State Invitational at Mayfair Park.
The Bruins move their record to 22-2 with their 16th straight victory, while the Fighting Irish fall to 7-7.
DiSalvatore went 3-for-4 in the game, recording her team-leading sixth game-winning RBI. Sophomore Megan Langenfeld picked up the win in relief to improve to 3-0 on the year, retiring all five batters she faced while striking out one. Freshman Donna Kerr started and gave up two runs (one earned), four hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
After Notre Dame came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. With one out, senior Krista Colburn reached on an error and came in on the very next pitch when DiSalvatore doubled to deep center to put the Bruins ahead 3-2.
The Bruins improved to 16-0 this season when scoring in their first at-bat, bringing across a pair in the top of the first. Freshman Katie Schroeder singled to left to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice by junior Amanda Kamekona. After Colburn walked to put two aboard, DiSalvatore doubled to right to plate Schroeder and Colburn to make it 2-0 Bruins.
The Fighting Irish cut the deficit in half on one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third when Ashley Ellis hit a one-out home run to left. The homer snapped a 26 1/3 scoreless innings streak for Kerr.
Notre Dame tied the game in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Beth Northway hit a grounder to first. DiSalvatore came home with it to retire Katie Laing for the second out. But the return throw to first was too high, allowing Christine Lux to score and make it 2-2.
Jody Valdivia pitched the first 6 1/3 for Notre Dame and gave up three runs (two earned), seven hits and three walks with one strikeout. Brittney Bargar tossed the last 2/3 of an inning, walking a batter. Lux had two hits for the Irish.
