The No. 38 California men's tennis team (4-5) lost a close 4-3 decision to No. 26 Arizona State (8-0) at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. today. The Golden Bears held a 3-2 match lead but lost singles matches on courts four and three to absorb their fifth team loss of the season. With the team score tied at three points each, senior Pierre Mouillon fell in the third set tiebreaker to Juan Carlos Rebaza, finishing 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 with a 10-4 score in the decisive tiebreaker.

The Bears opened up play in the desert on the short end, falling on all three doubles courts. Freshmen duo Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarov pushed their Sun Devil counterparts for a seven-all tie in their court-three match but lost the final two games, clinching the doubles point for ASU. Putting up a fight on court one, the Bears' duo of junior Geoff Chizever and freshman Pedro Zerbini couldn't overcome the No. 31-ranked team of T.J. Bellama and Matt Brooklyn, falling by an 8-5 score.

In singles play, the Devils upped their lead to 2-0 when No. 49 Andres Arango defeated junior Eoin Heavey on court two 6-0, 6-3. The Bears came right back with three consecutive wins to take their lead however. First, Katsarov took a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court six against Bellama and then Dahan scored a 6-2, 6-4 win on court five to tie the match up. Sophomore Kallim Stewart's 6-3, 7-6 win on court one against Matt Brooklyn gave the Bears the 3-2 go-ahead point. But the Sun Devils would not be put out as easily. Harry Skinner defeated Zerbini on court four by a 7-6, 6-3 score to leave the battle on court three as the match clincher.

Falling in the first set to Rebaza, Mouillon came back to take a commanding 6-1 win in the second. The third set went the distance with Mouillon forcing a six-all tie and a tiebreaker. Mouillon however, managed only four points in the tiebreaker to give the Sun Devils the win on court three and the match victory.

The Bears remain in Arizona and travel up the interstate to face the No. 36 Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz. tomorrow in a 1 p.m. (MST) start.
