USC Wins Halted Game At Winthrop, 7-3
March 8, 2008
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Derek Perren went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI Saturday as the USC Trojans completed a halted game with a 7-3 win over the Winthrop Eagles. The game was halted Friday in the 6th inning due to heavy fog. Anthony Vasquez hit a fly ball to center that was lost in the fog, resulting in a triple and the suspension of the game.
Tommy Milone (1-0) went five innings for the Trojans, allowing one earned run with nine strikeouts. Freshman Jeff Grijalva (San Clemente/San Clemente HS) picked up his first save as a Trojan with four innings on Saturday in the makeup, allowing just one run on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Milone and Grijalva frustrated Winthrop batters as the Eagles stranded 13 runners, including the bases loaded three times. With USC leading 3-2 in the second, Milone had the bases loaded after back-to-back bunts by the Eagles with no outs. Milone then struck out Aaron Bonami, got Bryn Henderson to line out to third and induced an inning-ending ground out by Eddie Tisdale.
Perren then led off the USC third, hammering a solo shot to right with the Trojans adding another run later on Robert Stock's RBI single to right. Winthrop loaded the bases in the third, but Milone struck out Bryan Bogue swinging to end the inning.
