Cook Shuts Down Winthrop As USC Earns Sweep, 7-1
March 9, 2008
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Junior right-hander Ryan Cook (Clovis/Clovis HS) allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings Sunday as the USC Trojans completed a series sweep with the 7-1 victory over the Winthrop Eagles. USC (9-4) swept an opponent for the second time this season, having accomplished the feat in an opening-weekend sweep at Florida International.
For the third time in the series, the Trojans scored in the first inning with three runs off WU starter Hamilton Bennett. Sophomore shortstop Grant Green unloaded a two-run triple to right center and later scored on Mike Roskopf's sacrifice fly. Billy Froehlich scored the Eagles' only run with an RBI fielder's choice in the first as the Trojan pitchers did not allow a runner past second base for the remainder of the game.
The Trojans return home to face UC Irvine on Tuesday (March 11) at 7 p.m. before a key weekend series against Long Beach State. All four games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Roberto Lopez extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games (his previous high was four games)...freshman Vinnie St. John recorded his first hit as a Trojan with a two-run, bases-loaded single in the third...the Trojans hit .367 in the weekend series against Winthrop with 40 hits while the pitching staff registered a 1.33 ERA...USC has won four straight games...the Trojans are batting .308 on the season with opponents batting just .237 against them.
