Straight-Set Sweep for Husky Men Over Pacific

March 9, 2008

SEATTLE - The Husky men's tennis team swept every set from the Pacific Tigers today, improving to 10-4 with a 7-0 win outdoors at the Bill Quillian Stadium. The 28th-ranked Huskies have reeled off five-straight victories.

UW took the initial 1-0 lead with a doubles point win. Andy Kuharszky and Derek Drabble got the first match, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Patrik Fischer and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan then clinched the point, defeated Moritz Starke and David Gonzalez, 8-4, in the No. 1 match. Freshmen duo Martin Kildahl and Tobi Obenaus then finished off doubles with an 8-5 win in the third sport. Kildahl and Obenaus have won seven-straight.

The Huskies maintained their focus against a determined Tigers team in singles play. Drabble got the first win, 6-3, 6-2 over Renan Delsin at the No. 4 position. He is now 8-3 in dual play. 82nd-ranked Nedunchezhiyan then put away Gonzalez at second singles, 6-3, 6-1. The clinching fourth point came from Kildahl, playing his second career dual match at No. 6 singles. Kildahl defeated Chase Oliphant, 6-2, 6-1.

Junior David Chu earned his second win of the weekend at No. 5 singles, overcoming Vegerd Veskimagi, 6-4, 6-3 to improve to 7-1 in dual play and 17-5 overall. UW's top singles player, Fischer, made his way through several long rallies and deuce games to defeat Starke at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, putting the Huskies ahead 6-0.

Kuharszky ended Pacific's last stab at a point when he fended off Artem Gramma, 7-5, 7-6 (5) at No. 3 singles. Kuharszky prevailed on a service winner on his fifth match point, and has now won his past five matches.

'We maybe started a little slow the first couple of games, but from there we were pretty tough. Our guys have really learned lately to be playing tough out there and trying not to give away any freebies. It turned out to be a really good weekend for the Huskies,' said head coach Matt Anger, referencing UW's 4-3 win over a nationally-ranked Pepperdine team on Friday.

The men will be back on the courts on Friday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m. for a dual with Eastern Washington prior to finals week.
