Anjelica Selden Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
March 10, 2008
Senior pitcher Anjelica Selden (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) of the UCLA softball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week (March 3-9).
Selden threw 22 scoreless innings this week, striking out 31 and winning a trio of 1-0 games against UNLV, #24 Virginia Tech and Long Beach State. She has thrown 26 consecutive scoreless innings and has not allowed an earned run in 39 1/3 innings. The senior opened the week with a one-hitter against a UNLV team which sent #1 Arizona State to its only loss this season. Selden fanned 13, striking out the side in the first and the seventh, allowing only one base runner on a single.
An old-fashioned pitchers' duel developed between Selden and Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher on Friday at the Long Beach State Invitational. But Selden came out on top, throwing her second straight one-hitter while striking out seven. She set down 11 straight at one point, allowing just two base runners on a single and a walk. The free pass was Selden's first in 41 1/3 innings. Selden's string of zeroes continued on Sunday against a Long Beach State squad which is the only team to defeat #5 Florida. She struck out 11 to post her fifth double-figure strikeout game in her last six starts.
Selden has 75 strikeouts in her last 43 innings and is 12-1 on the season with a 0.80 earned run average.
This is Selden's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and fourth of her career.
