Sixth-Ranked UCLA Edges No. 11 Baylor, 4-3
March 10, 2008
LOS ANGELES - One of the best rivalries in college tennis was renewed at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Monday, as the sixth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team edged No. 11 Baylor, 4-3 in a non-conference showdown. The Bruins, whose lone loss on the season was to top-ranked Virginia, improve to 11-1 overall. With the loss, Baylor falls to 10-6 overall.
UCLA, which beat Baylor, 4-3 to claim the 2005 NCAA title, managed to win two of three doubles matches on Monday to win the point. The clinching win came down to court No. 1, where UCLA's Nick Meister and Harel Srugo upset 49th-ranked Attila Bucko/Dominik Mueller, 8-3.
Despite dropping their doubles match, senior Mathieu Dehaine and freshman Holden Seguso both posted singles wins to give UCLA a 3-0 lead. Dehaine downed Mueller, 6-2, 7-6(3) at court No. 3, while Seguso was able to recover from a tough first set to eventually defeat David Galic, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
That set the stage for junior Michael Look to clinch the win at court No. 4, as he registered a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gwen Gorches.
With the match already decided, Baylor took wins at court Nos. 1, 5 and 6.
The last four matches between UCLA and Baylor have all been 4-3 scores. After edging the Bears, 4-3 in the 2005 NCAA Final, UCLA dropped a pair of 4-3 decisions in 2006 and 2007.
UCLA has one more match this week, as the Bruins are scheduled to host Duke on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
