No. 13 UC Irvine Defeats USC, 11-3
March 11, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Tony Asaro went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI as the No. 13 UC Irvine Anteaters defeated the USC Trojans, 11-3, to sweep the two-game series Tuesday at Dedeaux Field. The Anteaters recorded 11 hits and took advantage of a Trojan team that committed five errors while allowing six walks and hitting eight batters.
UC Irvine (11-1) got a strong pitching effort from starter Daniel Bibona (3-0), who allowed two runs in six innings. He allowed just four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. UCI catcher Aaron Lowenstein scored four times tonight.
In the UCI second with two outs and a runner at first, Lowenstein walked. Asaro then hit a two-run double to right center for the Anteaters' first runs of the game. After Asaro advanced on a wild pitch, Ben Orloff walked to put runners at the corners. UCI head coach Mike Gillespie then used one of his trademark plays where Orloff stumbles on purpose to draw a throw from Beck and during the rundown, Asaro stole home for the third run. Lowenstein used the same play again in the fourth inning as the Anteaters broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Asaro hit his second two-run double in the fifth.
USC plays No. 9 Long Beach State this weekend, beginning with a 6:30 p.m. start on Friday (March 14) at Blair Field. Saturday's game will be at Dedeaux Field, starting at 1:30 p.m. with Sunday's series finale at Blair Field with a 1 p.m start. All three games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Freshman Danny Beck, who was a last-minute change, made his first collegiate start for the Trojans, allowing four runs in 2 1/3 innings...Lopez extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games, hitting .472 (25-for-53) during the streak with 11 RBI...junior pitcher Anthony Encinas made his season debut, throwing a perfect ninth inning in relief.
