No. 37 Huskies Knock Off No. 34 Cougars, 6-1

March 14, 2008

SEATTLE - Round one goes to the Huskies. The 37th-ranked Washington women's tennis team (10-4) defeated No. 34 Washington State 6-1 today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in the first of two meetings between the two schools this spring.

Freshman standout Venise Chan, ranked 41st, picked up her fifth win against a ranked opponent, routing 44th-ranked Ekaterina Burduli, 6-1, 6-1 in a match that finished 30 minutes before any other. Chan is now 13-2 in dual play and 19-4 overall.

Senior Tara Simpson was cruising at No. 3 singles, up 6-0 and 5-2, but WSU's Ekaterina Kamendova rallied back to force a tiebreaker. Kamendova then had three set points, but Simpson saved them all and won 8-6 in the breaker to give UW a 3-0 lead. Simpson is now 18-6.

The clinching point was delivered by freshman Kelsey Anonsen, who edged Jessica Gomez, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Joyce Ardies was forced to a third set after leading Bianca Selaru, 6-3, 4-2, but Ardies stayed tough and won the final three games to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Aleksandra Malovic regrouped after a first set loss and eventually upended Aleksandra Stefanova, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Washington State's lone point came at No. 5 singles, where Aleksandra Cekic came back to defeat freshman Vanja Radunovic in a third-set super-tiebreak.

Washington came out aggressively in doubles play and wound up with a sweep for the 1-0 lead. Radunovic and Malovic cruised at third doubles over Selaru and Stefanova, taking a 5-0 lead before WSU got a game, and finishing up 8-1. The point was clinched by Ardies and Simpson, who captured every game against Burduli and Cekic at No. 1 doubles. Moments later, Chan and Anonsen wrapped up an 8-5 victory over Marina Nicolas and Kamendova at No. 2 doubles. The Husky pair fought back from an early 2-4 deficit.

The Huskies will take a week off for finals week before returning to action on Monday, March 24 at Oregon. The Huskies beat the Ducks, 6-1, in Seattle in the first meeting, but the second encounter is the one that counts towards Pac-10 standings.
