Cal Posts Season-Best Score on Senior Day

BERKELEY - Behind numerous season-high marks, the California women's gymnastics team notched its highest final score of the season (194.100) at the Senior Day quad meet against Cal State Fullerton, San Jose State and UC Davis Sunday at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears placed second in the meet behind the Spartans (194.825), but defeated the Titans (193.950) and the Aggies (191.325). Cal improved its record to 6-11 on the season.
In addition to the overall final score, the Bears also set a season-best mark on floor with a 48.775. In the event, sophomore Sophia Hocini achieved a new personal best of 9.900, tying for first among all gymnasts. Junior Jessica Kelley also tied her career best with a 9.875, which tied her for third overall. Adding to Cal's success on floor, freshman Avery Gee posted a 9.750.
As strong as the Bears were on floor, it wasn't where they performed at their best on the day. On bars, Cal tallied a 49.075. Four season highs were also earned in that event, as Kelley earned a 9.850, junior Bridgette Glass tallied a 9.875, senior Nicki Wells scored a 9.775 and freshman Nassim Mirreghabie tied her season best with a 9.725. Glass won the event with Kelley in second, tied with senior Siobhan Luce. The Bears were in third after the opening rotation, but after winning bars in the second rotation; they jumped into second and hung on for the rest of the meet.
Hocini also achieved a new career best on beam, notching a 9.800. In addition, Glass won her second event of the day on beam and tied her career best with a 9.900, while Mirreghabie posted a season-high mark of 9.850. The scores helped Cal earn a 48.450 event score. After the first-place finish by Glass, Hocini took second among all gymnasts and Mirreghabie tied for third.
In the all-around, Hocini finished first among Cal gymnasts with a 38.350. Kelley and Luce tied with a 38.225. Cal State Fullerton's Alaina Baker won the all-around with score of 38.950.
Cal travels to Boise, Idaho next Friday to face No. 19 Boise State at 6 p.m. (PT)
