No. 12 Cal Baseball Defeats Loyola Marymount, 6-1

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 12-ranked California baseball team, behind solid pitching and a 14-hit attack, defeated Loyola Marymount, 6-1, Sunday in the final game of a four-game series at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears went 3-1 against the Lions, winning 10-4 on Friday and splitting a doubleheader Saturday (won 21-9, lost 6-2) before Sunday's victory. Cal is now 13-2-1 on the year, while the Lions record falls to 8-10.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was senior right-hander Alex Rollin, who improved his record to 2-0, throwing 5.2 innings with six hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts. At the plate, Cal was bolstered by sophomore designated hitter Rich Gorman and junior shortstop Michael Brady, who both had home runs on the day. Gorman led-off the bottom of the first inning with a home run for the second day in a row and also added an RBI double in the second inning off LMU starter Nate Keadle (0-2, 2.0 innings, eight hits, four runs, one walk, one strikeout). Brady was 2-for-4 and hit his second roundtripper of the year with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Other top hitters for the Bears were senior second baseman Josh Satin, junior first baseman David Cooper and sophomore catcher Dylan Tonneson. Satin continued his hot hitting as he was 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the second inning, extending his hitting streak this season to a career-high 16 games. Combined with his five-game hitting at the end of last season, Satin has hit safely in 21 straight games. Cooper was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and Tonneson was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Cal also got solid relief pitching from sophomore right-hander Daniel Wolford (2.1 innings, two hits, no runs, one walk, two strikeouts) and junior right-hander Matt Gorgen (1.0 inning, no hits, no runs, one walk, two strikeouts). In six appearances and 16.1 innings, Wolford has yet to give up an earned run and has 16 strikeouts in those 16.1 innings.
The Bears will next host Sacramento State on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal then begins Pac-10 play Mar. 20-22 when it travels to Washington State for a three-game series.
