Jim Thomas Hired as UW Assistant Women's Soccer Coach
March 18, 2008
SEATTLE - Jim Thomas, who spent the last four years with the prominent Crossfire Premier Soccer Club in Redmond, Wash., was named an assistant coach with the University of Washington women's soccer team, head coach Lesle Gallimore announced Tuesday.
Thomas has thrived as a coach with several different programs, having successful stints at the club, high school and community college level. He is currently testing for his U.S. Soccer Class B coaching license.
'I am excited to announce the hiring of Jim Thomas, a local club coach who came through as our top candidate after a two-month national search,' Gallimore exclaimed. 'Jim has vast and high-level club coaching experience here in the Northwest and is also very well connected throughout the region and country.
'Jim's enthusiasm, maturity, and passion to coach at this level are a few of the many things that drew us to him. We are excited to add him to our staff and the Husky family.'
Thomas has been active in the club ranks in the state of Washington since 2001 when began working with the Northwest Nationals Premier Soccer Club. He led U-16 and U-18 teams to 2005 state championships and regional quarterfinal appearances. Eighteen of his athletes are now playing in the collegiate ranks, including 14 at the NCAA Division I level.
Between 2001 and 2004, Thomas rebuilt the boy's soccer program at Seattle's Roosevelt High School. He inherited a 1-13 team and guided the Roughriders to three consecutive winning seasons and two straight playoff berths.
After that successful stint with a prep program, Thomas worked at Edmonds (Wash.) Community College from 2005 to 2007. He served as the men's head coach, directing the squad to an elite eight effort in the NWAACC. Thomas also served as Edmonds' women's assistant coach during that period.
A graduate of Glamorgan University in Wales, Thomas played on the college team that advanced the sweet sixteen of the National Cup. He was a starting forward for three seasons, two of them as the team's top scorer.
Thomas was active with the Littlehampton Football Club, climbing the ranks from the youth team to the men's reserves before playing semi-pro ball with the men's first team. He continues to play in the Northwest as a member of the Hibernian Saints.
'Our student-athletes will benefit from Jim's knowledge and coaching style, and he will add fresh and new ideas to our staff and program,' added Gallimore. 'He is a coach with a very bright future in the game and we couldn't be more pleased to have him on board.'
Thomas replaces Tami (Bennett) Nguyen, a former standout player for the Huskies. She resigned in January after five seasons as an assistant coach at Washington.
'I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Tami for her dedication and hard work on behalf of our women's soccer program here at Washington, not just as an assistant over the past five seasons, but as an alum and former standout student-athlete,' Gallimore said. 'We all benefited greatly from Tami's presence in our program. We wish her nothing but success and happiness in the future.'
