March 21, 2008
Honolulu - The 13th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats handed California its first loss since March 9 with an 8-0 win over the 25th-ranked Golden Bears in the third day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational hosted by Hawaii on Friday afternoon.
Cal (28-10) concludes the four-day tournament on Saturday against Hawaii at 5:00 p.m. (PDT). The Bears defeated the Warriors earlier this season in the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas.
Northwestern pitcher Lauren Delaney surrendered four hits for the win in the circle. Cal starter Marissa Drewrey (seven hits, five runs, seven strikeouts) suffered the loss to fall to 16-5 on the season. Drewrey has struck out six or more batters 16 times this season.
Tammy Williams delivered the key hit of the game for the Wildcats with a two-run home run off of Drewrey in the third inning. It was the first home run given up by Drewrey since Feb. 29.
Cal had one of its best opportunities to score in the bottom of the third with two runners on and two outs, but Delaney struck out Gina Leomiti to end the threat and the inning.
