March 22, 2008
Stanford, Calif. - A pair of third-inning runs was all the Cardinal softball team needed tonab its 30th win of the season tonight at Smith Family Stadium. The team recorded three of its four hits in the inning, and claimed its third win of the weekend. Stanford improves to 30-2 on the year, and will finish out the Stanford Invitational II against East Carolina tomorrow.
Stanford was outhit by an opponent for just the third time this season, 5-4. Junior shortstop Maddy Coon reached on all three plate appearances and recorded her 24th RBI of the year, while sophomore center fielder Alissa Haber crushed her team-leading ninth double of the year. Junior pitcher Missy Penna nabbed her 19th win of the year, and struck out 11 batters.
With one out in the third, senior Anna Beardman got the Cardinal offense started with a single to left field. Beardman scored on an ensuing double to center by Haber, putting the Cardinal on the board for the school-record 32nd straight game. Haber stole third, and scored easily on a single through the left side by Coon.
BYU put runners on in every inning, but Penna and the Stanford defense held strong each time. Penna recorded a key strikeout to strand runners at second and third in the fourth inning, and retired three consecutive batters in the sixth to strand a runner at second.
Of note, the Cardinal reached the 30-win mark at the earliest date in school history. It is only the third time that Stanford has reached 30 wins before the month of April.
Stanford will play the second of two games at Smith Family Stadium tomorrow, closing out the Stanford Invitational II against East Carolina at noon.
