No. 5 Stanford Ends Long Layoff With 6-1 Win Over Cal Poly

STANFORD, Calif.- Back in action for the first time in 16 days, No. 5 Stanford cruised to a 6-1 victory over No. 66 Cal Poly on Monday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

The Cardinal improves to 11-3 overall while Cal Poly falls to 10-8. The victory also extends Stanford's regular-season home winning streak to 101 matches.

Stanford opened the match by capturing the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. An 8-4 victory by the No. 2 duo of senior Whitney Deason and junior Jessica Nguyen clinched the point and gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead.

In singles action, Stanford picked up straight-set wins at the top five positions in the lineup. Sophomore Lindsay Burdette (6-2, 6-3 over Whitney Peterson at the No. 3 spot) and freshman Carolyn McVeigh (6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot) both won their fourth straight match while Nguyen became the first Cardinal player to reach the 20-win plateau this year with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 over Steffi Wong.

Stanford is back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 26, at Pepperdine. The match is slated for noon.
