March 24, 2008

After a strong Spring Break on the road, two USC tennis players earned their first career honors as Pac-10 Player of the Week. On the men's side, junior Abdullah Magdas tacked up two straight-set wins for the Trojans as they upset two teams on the road. Meanwhile, for the USC women, freshman Leyla Entekhabi ran her singles winning streak up to 14 straight victories in clinching a road win for the Women of Troy.

Ranked #110 in the nation in singles, freshman Leyla Entekhabi has stretched her singles win streak out to 14 straight victories after gaining another match-clinching win last week on the road. From her No. 6 position, Entekhabi tallied her 14th consecutive singles win on a 7-5, 7-5 decision over Sarah Lancaster to secure victory for USC, up 4-2 against No. 17 host Texas. Entekhabi is a perfect 14-0 in dual match singles play and holds a 23-6 overall singles mark. The No. 10 USC women hold a 12-4 overall record in dual match play this season. She is the first USC woman to be named Pac-10 Player of the Week this season. This is her first career Pac-10 honor.

Abdullah Magdas won in straight sets in both his matches over the weekend, helping the No. 9 Trojans to two upset road wins. Magdas sparked a winning run for USC against No. 4 Texas first, getting the Trojans' first point of the match with his dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over Josh Zavala, as USC came back from an 0-2 deficit to win the match at Texas 4-3. Against No. 8 Tulsa, Magdas clinched another upset win for USC with another straight-set victory - topping Ross Cunningham 7-6 (4), 6-4 that made it 4-0 in the match at Tulsa. Magdas has won four straight singles matches now to hold a 14-4 overall singles record and is 11-3 in dual match singles play. Ranked No. 9 in the nation, the USC men are now 13-3 overall. Magdas is the second USC man to be named Pac-10 Player of the week this season. It is his first career Pac-10 honor.
