Cal Men's Tennis Faces No. 13 Pepperdine On The Road
March 25, 2008
BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team (8-6) heads south this week to take on No. 13 Pepperdine (9-6) at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, in Malibu, Calif. Match time is 11 a.m., Wednesday (March 26). The match-up against the Waves will be the last for the Golden Bears before Pac-10 Conference play begins with the Arizona schools paying a visit to Berkeley later this week.
The Bears have won four out of their last five matches. Three of those four wins were lopsided 7-0 victories over Penn, San Francisco and UNLV. Freshmen Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarov lead the way for the Bears each with 10 wins in dual matches this year. Katsarov has already reached 23 singles wins in his first year on the team. Cal has won the doubles point in its last four tries after starting out slow in that department earlier this season.
Sophomore Kallim Stewart holds the No. 116 ranking in the March 18 ITA men's singles rankings and has won five of his last six singles matches. Dahan comes into the match against the Waves riding a team-high seven-match winning streak but Katsarov isn't far behind having won seven of his last eight matches. Head coach Peter Wright is closing on a milestone of his own, needing only two more wins to reach the 200-win plateau.
The Waves come into their match with Cal on the coattails of a six-match winning streak; the winners of seven of their last eight. The turn-around for Pepperdine is significant after the team opened the season with a 1-5 record. Pepperdine defeated a No. 27-ranked Texas Christian team by a 7-0 score last week at home. The Waves are led by senior Andre Begemann, who holds the No. 10 ranking. Sophomore Bassam Beidas is ranked No. 20 and junior Omar Altmann is ranked No. 123.
The Bears will prepare for Pac-10 play when they return from Southern California, hosting Arizona Friday (March 28), at 1:30 p.m. and Arizona State Saturday (March 29), in a 1 p.m. start each at Hellman Tennis Complex. Please check CalBears.com for updates and scores.
