No. 11 Cal Baseball Loses 7-5 in 10 Innings at Santa Clara
March 25, 2008
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. - The No. 11-ranked California baseball team lost its second extra-inning game in a row, falling at Santa Clara, 7-5 in 10 innings Tuesday night. The Golden Bears had scored a run in the top of the ninth inning on Josh Satin's sacrifice fly to tie the game, 5-5, but the Broncos' Matt Long hit a two-run homer off of Cal closer Matt Gorgen in the bottom of the 10th inning for the game-winner. The Bears, who lost 5-4 in 10 innings at Washington State last Saturday, dropped to 15-5-1 overall (2-1 in the Pac-10). Santa Clara improved to 12-8.
The winning pitcher for the Broncos was reliever Thain Simon, who improved his record to 6-0 by pitching the final 2.0 innings with no runs, no hits, no walks and four strikeouts. Gorgen fell to 0-2 (1.2 innings, four hits, two runs, no walks, two strikeouts).
It was a back and forth game as Cal took an early lead when senior second baseman Satin extended his school-record hitting streak to 25 games when he hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. With one out, junior left fielder Charlie Cutler singled to right center field off of Santa Clara starter Matt Wickswat, stole second and scored off of Satin's shot over the left field fence. Satin has now hit safely in all 20 games he has played in this season, plus ending the 2007 season on a five-game hitting streak.
Santa Clara came back by scoring twice in the second inning on back-to-back bases loaded walks by Jon Karcich and Matt Long before Cal freshman Kevin Miller (4.2 innings, two hits, one unearned run, one walk, career-high seven strikeouts) was able to strike out the side. The Broncos ended up taking a 3-2 lead on Geoff Klein's RBI groundout in the third inning. The Bears again gained the advantage when sophomore designated hitter Rich Gorman hit a two-run homer to center field off of Wickswat in the top of the fourth inning for a 4-2 lead.
The Broncos tied the contest in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Ryan Conan, and then took a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning on Brady Fuerst's RBI double off of Gorgen. Cal came back to tie the game in the top of the ninth when Cutler led-off the inning with a single and was advanced to third on junior first baseman David Cooper's single down the right field line. Cutler then scored on Satin's sacrifice fly to center field. Cutler finished the evening 3-for-5 and Satin knocked in three runs.
The Bears will next host No. 5-ranked Long Beach State in a three-game series at Evans Diamond, beginning Friday, Mar. 28 at 2:30 p.m.
Cal: Satin, two-run homer in the first inning. Gorman, two-run homer in the fourth inning.
Santa Clara: Long, two-run homer in the 10th inning.
