March 25, 2008
Berkeley - The 23rd-ranked California softball team remained undefeated at home this season with a 10-4 win over the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders on Tuesday afternoon from Levine-Fricke Field.
The victory helped Cal improved to 30-10 and a perfect 3-0 against Big West teams as well. Cal has not lost to a non-conference team at home since 2000. The Golden Bears have won 12 of their last 13 games and 22 of their last 25 since Feb. 23.
Valerie Arioto, who had a .750 batting average against Big West teams entering today's contest, went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Gina Leomiti notched her fourth home run of the season and scored two runs, while Bernice Masaniai had two RBI and a run scored. Erika Racklin stole her 20th base of the season, bringing her career total to 64 - 10 shy of tying the all-time mark held by Keri Kropke.
Marissa Drewrey earned win No. 18 in the circle, allowing two hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
Cal put up a two-spot in the bottom of the first inning when Leomiti's two-run home run cleared the left-center field wall. Arioto also scored after leading off the inning with a double to right field.
The Bears then tacked on five more runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead over the Highlanders. A fielding miscue by the UCR third baseman allowed both Julie Meyer and Vernae Sevilla to score to make it 4-0. Later in the inning, Masaniai drilled a double to center field to plate Leomiti and Arioto.
UCR began to chip away at Cal's lead with a run in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth, making the score 7-4.
Cal added a little breathing room in the bottom of the sixth inning with three more runs to up its lead to 10-4.
The Bears take on one more non-conference opponent at home tomorrow - Pacific at 2:00 p.m., before opening conference play vs. No. 1 Arizona State on Friday and No. 10 Arizona on Saturday and Sunday.
