10 Golden Bears Collect All-America Honors

Berkeley - The California Golden Bear women's swimming team capped off its 2007-08 season with a fifth place finish at the 2008 NCAA Women's swimming and diving Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, hosted by Ohio State. Under the direction of head coach Teri McKeever, Cal has now finished fifth or better three straight years. Additionally, the Bears have placed in the top 10 for the last 12 years.
ESPN2 will provide 90 minutes of tape delayed coverage of the championships Friday, March 28 at 2 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. PDT).
10 Golden Bears collected All-America honors, including seniors Emily Silver and Rachel Ridgeway; juniors Madison Kennedy, Dana Vollmer and Lauren Rogers; sophomores Lauren Boyle and Alexandra Ellis; and freshmen Tara Thomas, Hannah Wilson and Amanda Sims. Here is a breakdown of the individual and relay All-America honors, beginning with the individual performances.
Emily Silver, senior
100-yard butterfly ... placed 11th in the 'B' final with a time of 53.06 to earn honorable mention All-America honors
200-yard Individual Medley ... swam a lifetime best 1:57.98 in the `B' finals to earn honorable mention All-America honors
100-yard Freestyle ... the senior did it again, swimming in her second consecutive championship final of the 100 free, this time posting a fifth-place finish time of 48.21 for All-America honors
Rachel Ridgeway, senior
200-yard Butterfly ... posted a time of 1:56.39 in the `B' final to earn honorable mention All-America honors
Madison Kennedy, junior
50-yard Freestyle ... after registering a school-record 21.87 in the morning preliminaries, Kennedy finished fourth in the finals with a 22.05, earning her All-America status
Dana Vollmer, junior
100-yard Butterfly ... finished in second-place with a 51.32 to earn All-America honors
200-yard Butterfly ... swam a 1:55.48 for a fifth-place finish to earn All-America honors
Lauren Rogers, junior
100-yard Backstroke ... Rogers, who was competing in her first-ever championship final, held off Arizona's Justine Schluntz to pick up 15 points and a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.24 for All-America honors. She exceeded her previous time in the 100 back when she placed ninth overall in last year's NCAA Championships in Minnesota (in the 'B' final) with a time of 53.59.
200-yard Backstroke ... swam a lifetime best 1:55.42 in the `B' final for honorable mention All-America honors.
Lauren Boyle, sophomore
1650-yard Freestyle ... earned All-America honors when she broke her own school record in the 1650-yard freestyle with a fifth-place finish of 16:01.80 - also a new lifetime best, and three seconds better than her previous school record of 16:03.51
500-yard Freestyle ... earned honorable mention All-America honors after registering a lifetime best 4:41.10 in the `B' final
Tara Thomas, freshman
100-yard Butterfly ... the freshman swam a lifetime best 53.09 in the `B' final to earn honorable mention All-America honors
Hannah Wilson, freshman
100-yard Butterfly ... the freshman swam a lifetime best 52.85 in the prelims and a 53.02 in the `B' final to earn honorable mention All-America honors
Amanda Sims, freshman
100-yard Butterfly ... the freshman swam a 53.49 in the `B' final to earn honorable mention All-America honors
The foursome swam a school-record and second-place finish 1:27.52 for All-America honors. The second-place finish was also considerably higher and faster than last year's 11th-place finish (1:30.11) at the NCAA Championships in Minnesota.
The quartet swam a second place time of 3:13.03 for All-America honors
Cal's foursome placed third (All-America honors) with a time of 7:01.09 - three seconds ahead of Georgia and Stanford. The 7:01.09 was three seconds faster than their Pac-10 Championship first-place time of 7:04.13 earlier this month in Long Beach.
The foursome gained All-America honors after a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:38.07. They held off Auburn (1:38.35) and Georgia (1:38.79) of the Southeastern Conference.
The quartet earned All-America status after a fifth-place finish time of 3:34.05
