No. 34 Stanford Blanks No. 15 Arizona State In Upset Victory, 7-0

March 28, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's tennis team rolled to a dominant 7-0 upset of the No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils in the first Pac-10 matchup of the season this afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the Stanford campus. The win avenges the Cardinal's 4-3 loss to the Sun Devils earlier this season on March 8.

Stanford took control early, sweeping the doubles matches in just under an hour of play. Juniors Matt Bruch and Blake Muller took down Arizona State's No. 52 T.J. Bellama and Matt Brooklyn in No. 1 Doubles, 8-4, in only their second dual match playing together as partners. Freshman Greg Hirshman and sophomore teammate Richard Wire provided the victory that would clinch the doubles point for the Cardinal, beating John Nanonsky II and Wes Miller, 8-5. Freshman Alex Clayton and sophomore Paul Morrissey also recorded their second victory of the year as a duo, upending Andres Arango and Harry Skinner, 8-3.

After most of the first sets of singles play were completed, Mother Nature interrupted singles play with a brief shower that was just heavy enough to make the courts unplayable. After approximately an hour and a half delay, the courts were dried enough to complete play.

Stanford continued their supremacy over the Sun Devils after the break in play. Clayton recorded the first singles match victory, defeating No. 62 Arango in straight sets. Hirshman made it 3-0 in favor of the Cardinal, also winning in straight sets, and Bruch recorded his second straight clinching victory with a win over Brooklyn, 6-3, 6-4.

The remaining three singles matches took some perseverance from Stanford to capture the extra points, as two went to three sets and one took 13 games in each of the two sets to complete. Muller and No. 91 Wire flip-flopped spots for today's match, with Muller taking over the No. 3 position and Wire playing in his first dual-match at No. 4. Muller defeated Arizona State's Skinner, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and Wire captured his eighth dual match victory over Juan Carlos Rebaza, 7-6, 7-6.

Phil Kao finished things up for the Cardinal, earning his third dual match victory of the year as he defeated Bellama, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Win the win, Stanford improves to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal will take the court against No. 55 Arizona tomorrow at home at 1 p.m.
