March 28, 2008
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University defense limited the offense to two rushing touchdowns over the course of the afternoon as the Cougars completed their first scrimmage of the spring season Friday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
Junior Chris Ivory rushed for scores of one and 15 yards on the afternoon, but that was all the Cougar defense allowed during the 90-minute scrimmage. Ivory pushed across the first score with a one-yard run, ending a drive that was highlighted by freshman Logwone Mitz's 46-yard run. Ivory later added a 15-yard scamper off the right side to cap the scoring.
'We have a lot of work to,' said Cougar Head Coach Paul Wulff. 'We did some okay things and we were better than last week, but our depth isn't where it needs to be. They are learning a new system so it was take a while, but I was pleased that our defense today was much better than last week.'
Rogers took most of the snaps with the first unit and ended his day 9-of-21 for 98 yards and no interceptions. Kevin Lopina connected on 3-of-5 passes for 38 yards and one interception. Freshman Marshall Lobbestael was also 3-for-5 for 53 yards, including a 35-yard strike to Randy Johnson, the longest play of the day.
Mitz finished the day with two rushes for 44 yards while Ivory had 38 yards on six carries. Junior Jace Perry had a big day by rushing for 43 yards on nine carries.
On the receiving end 10 different receivers made catches on the afternoon, with Daniel Blackledge leading the way with three for 27 yards. Devin Frischknecht, Brandon Gibson and Benny Ward each had two catches.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars forced two interceptions, one by freshman Marshal Pirtz and the other by sophomore Romeo Pellum. The WSU defense also registered four sacks on the afternoon, one each by juniors Andy Mattingly and Bob Hilgert, and seniors Cory Evans and Adam Hineline.
The Cougars resume spring practice Monday afternoon while the next scrimmage will take place Friday, April 4 at Martin Stadium.
