March 29, 2008
SEATTLE - Aleah Macon struck out 10 Oregon State batters to lead No. 23 Washington to a 1-0 win in the Huskies Pac-10 Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium.
Macon held the Beavers to three hits and finished with her sixth double-digit strikeout performance of the season to improve to 11-4. It was her fourth shutout and 11th complete-game of the season.
Washington (22-9-1, 1-0 Pac-10) scored its only run in the third inning on an RBI-single by Morgan Stuart. With two outs, Jace Williams hit a ground rule double to left field and then came home to score when Stuart blooped a single into right field over the head of OSU first baseman DeAnn Young.
Oregon State's only threat came in the fourth inning when they managed to load the bases with two outs. Dani Chisholm singled with one out and then with two outs Audrey Roderfeld doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. After Erin Guzy walked to load the bases, Macon got Paige Lowe to swing through strike three to get out of the jam.
Macon sat the Beavers down in order in the first, third and sixth inning, and only allowed one runner to get past second base.
Washington had seven hits off of Beaver pitcher Kelly Dyer (12-11), led by Alicia Blake's 2-for-3 effort.
Macon had one of the Huskies hits, a single in the second inning that came during her first collegiate at-bat.
The Huskies were scheduled to open Pac-10 play yesterday against Oregon, but that game was rained out.
Washington and Oregon State (21-16, 0-2 Pac-10) conclude their two-game series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
