Cardinal Rowing Explodes Out Of The Gate
March 29, 2008
Stanford rowing jumped off to a great start to the 2008 season as the first day of action at the Pac-10 Challenge presented by Windermere concluded. The men won five races and the women won three on the course at the Redwood Shores Lagoon and will head into the final day of action tomorrow.
The Stanford Men's Varsity rowing team started the 2008 campaign with a spirited dual with Cornell University. The Cardinal and the Big Red fought stroke for stroke down the Redwood Shores Lagoon with Stanford racing to a6:04 finishing time to 6:08 for Cornell. Later in the day, in fierce headwind conditions, Stanford defeated Oregon St. by 12 seconds. Stanford's Freshman team also won two races with the second varsity splitting their pair. The regatta will conclude on Sunday with the Cardinal men racing Trinity College.
The women's lightweight crew cruised to victories in both races today defeating MIT by 36.48 seconds and Loyola Marymount by 10.52 seconds, and the Women's Varsity Eight was successful against Notre Dame by 7.19 seconds, but lost to Virginia in the afternoon.
'Dual racing is psychological, and the intimacy of the Redwood Shores venue really enhances that aspect of it. The No. 10 ranked varsity eight kicked off the day with a solid win over No. 14 Notre Dame, a crew that beat us here last year. In the afternoon, we hoped to capitalize on No. 9 Cal's defeat of No. 2 Virginia in the morning, but the Cav's rebounded and reminded us that you have to be willing to fight for every single stroke over 2000 meters. We have only a handful of races this season, so my hope is it's a lesson well learned.'
Tomorrow's races will finish off competition at the Pac-10 Challenge presented by Windermere.
