No. 23 UCLA Baseball Drops Series Finale at No. 6 Arizona, 8-4

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 23 UCLA baseball team lost the series finale at No. 6 Arizona, 8-4, Sunday afternoon after having won the three-game road set with victories on Friday and Saturday. First baseman Casey Haerther led the Bruins (12-10, 2-1 Pac-10) at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run and a team-leading two RBI.
Arizona (14-9, 2-4 Pac-10) was led offensively by first baseman C.J. Ziegler, who went 3-for-4 with a team-high three runs. Center fielder T.J. Steele was 3-for-4 with one double, and third baseman Brad Glenn was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
Wildcat left-hander Eric Berger (2-1) picked up the win, limiting UCLA to two runs and four hits in five innings. UCLA left-hander Gavin Brooks (1-2) absorbed the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) and 10 hits in a 6.1 innings.
Arizona assumed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI-single by Steele, sending home Ziegler from second. Haerther responded with a one-out solo home run in the top of the second, tying the contest, 1-1. Haerther's home run marked his eighth hit in his last eight plate appearances, as the Bruins' first baseman went 7-for-7 Saturday night.
The Wildcats recaptured the lead in the bottom of the second. After clubbing a leadoff double to left, shortstop Bryce Ortega advanced home on a one-out single to left by second baseman Robert Abel. UCLA responded again, tying the ballgame at 2-2 - a sacrifice fly to center by right fielder Gabe Cohen sent home left fielder Chris Giovinazzo.
Arizona scored one run in the fourth and added two runs in the fifth to capture a 5-2 lead. Left fielder Hunter Pace led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left and advanced to third on a throwing error by Brooks on a pickoff attempt. Catcher Dwight Childs lifted a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Pace to score the go-ahead run.
The Wildcats led off their half of the fifth inning with right fielder Jon Gaston reaching base on a fielding error by second baseman Alden Carrithers. Ziegler followed with a single to right, sending Gaston to third base. A base-hit to left by third baseman Brad Glenn scored Gaston, and Ziegler crossed the plate on a double-play groundout.
Arizona added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run to left by Glenn.
The Bruins cut Arizona's lead to 7-4 in the top of the eighth. After left-hander Daniel Schlereth walked the bases loaded, shortstop Brandon Crawford brought home third baseman Jermaine Curtis on a fielder's choice. A hard-hit ball to third base by Haerther scored second baseman Alden Carrithers from third.
The Wildcats scored once in the eighth inning on an RBI-single to left field by Gaston.
UCLA returns to action against San Diego State on Tuesday, April 1, when the Bruins open a 13-game homestand at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
Game Notes: Casey Haerther and Jermaine Curtis each went 9-for-14 in three games at Arizona - Haerther collected 16 total bases, four doubles, one home run, six RBI and five runs...Curtis finished with one double, one triple, four runs, two walks, four runs and three RBI...Alden Carrithers has hit safely in 17 of the Bruins' 21 games...freshman Chris Giovinazzo recorded his first collegiate hit when he lined a single to center field to leadoff the top of the third inning.
